Teaching about my NYC experiences

While in New York City I learned some amazing lessons that everybody needs to know. The main lesson I learned was that us UVU students really are good enough. Our education is meaningful and we can succeed in the “real world.” After returning from NYC I had the opportunity to teach a few communication classes about what I learned and the value of going on a PR field Experience trip.

During the trip it really stuck out to me the importance of not using filler words in a presentation. We all do it, but that does not excuse it. I read an article giving tips on how to stop using filler words such as; like, uhm, uhh, soo…

I have noticed that when people use filler words, they start to lose credibility. I personally start to zone out and stop paying attention. I even sometimes just sit there and count the filler words presenters are saying.

I am guilty as ever for using filler words. But, I am actively trying to erase them from my vocabulary! While giving my presentation to classes i was conscious of the words I was saying. I slowed down while presenting and that helped me refrain from saying my usual filler word, like. Getting rid of filler words does not happen overnight, but I plan to work hard to never use them in a presentation or conversation ever again. It’s a hard goal, but it’s realistic!
